Hartland, Wisconsin — Four General Federation of Women’s Clubs (GFWC) in the Lake Country area will participate in the National Day of Service by spotlighting food insecurity and hunger in the U.S.
The Woman’s Clubs of Hartland, Oconomowoc and Pewaukee and the Junior Woman’s Club of Oconomowoc will join their affiliated national organization Sept. 28 to increase public awareness and provide food resources to residents and families in their communities.
The clubs will partner with local grocery stores Sept. 28 to support their local food pantries. Grocery stores involved include Piggly Wiggly Stores at Cottonwood Avenue in Hartland and Brown Street in Oconomowoc, Metro Market at Pabst Farms in Oconomowoc, and Pick ’n Save on Capitol Drive in Pewaukee. Depending on which store they visit, community members will be able to support the National Day of Service by donating food items, rounding up at the register or purchasing pre-packaged bags of food. Local women’s club members will be in stores from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. to encourage community participation.
According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 34 million people in the U.S. are food insecure, 9 million children are hungry, 53 million people turned to food banks following COVID-19 due to unemployment and 100 percent of U.S. counties have families suffering from food insecurity.
Addressing hunger and food insecurity through participation in the National Day of Service is one of the many ways that club members serve their communities.
